LESLIE AUGUSTUS BUHTON WADE, born at Sydney on the 20th June, 1864, died suddenly on the 12th January, 1915.
Educated at Bathurst and Parramatta, he entered the Public Works Department in 1880, as a cadet under the late Mr. W. C. Bennett, M.Inst.C.E., becoming a permanent officer in 1885.
In 1890 he was appointed Resident Engineer in the Water Conservation service under Mr. H. G. McKinney, M.Inst.C.E.
Subsequently he carried out various works under Mr. C. W. Darley, M.Inst.C.E., Chief Engineer for Public Works, and was appointed in 1899 Inspecting Engineer for water conservation and country towns supply.
From 1901 to 1909 he was Engineer to the water-supply and sewerage branch, and next became Chief Engineer for irrigation and drainage, relinquishing the drainage branch in 1911 to devote himself entirely to irrigation.
At the time of his death he was Commissioner for Water Conservation and Irrigation. He was associated with, amongst other notable works, sewer outfalls for Sydney, the Cataract and Burrin Juck dams, and the Murrumbidgee irrigation scheme.
Mr. Wade was elected an Associate Member of the Institution on the 3rd December, 1889, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 19th December, 1905.
