LEWIS JOHN CALCATERRA was for many years surveyor to Lloyd's Register of Shipping, for Malta. He was born in Italy in 1884 and received his training from 1899 to 1903 with the Malta Railway, the Mersey and East Coast Engineering Works (Malta Branch), and H.M. Dockyard.
He then went to sea for eleven years, during four of which he was chief engineer of S.S. Arabistau and S.S. Iperia. From 1915 to 1919 he held the position of engineer and manager of the Malta Cold Stores, Ltd., and in 1917 he also took over the duties of surveyor to the British Corporation Register of Shipping. Two years later he was appointed consulting engineer to the Marine Engineering and Salvage Company and was responsible for the repairs and salvage operations carried out by the firm. He commenced his association with Lloyd's Register of Shipping in 1925. He also held the position of Government inspector of land and marine boilers, and was a member of the board of examiners for land and marine engineers in Malta.
Mr. Calcaterra was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1926, and was also a Member of the Institution of Naval Architects. His death occurred at Sliema, Malta, on 3rd February 1938.
