The longest bridge in the world at the time of opening (2.25 miles long)
1925 The contract for the construction of a bridge over the river Zambesi, to carry the railway from Beira to Nyasaland, was s igned in Lisbon on July 14th. The construction of the bridge would provide Nyasaland with an ocean port in British territory.[1]
1930 Contract signed. Steelwork would be constructed and installed by Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Co. The bridge would connect the Trans-Zambesia Railway with the Central African Railway
1931 Construction started
1934 Last span installed in the bridge. The railway carried by the bridge would greatly help the trade between Nyasaland and Portuguese East Africa. It was paid for by the British Government[2]
