LEON BYRON WOODWORTH, who died at Durban on the 29th May, 1942, was closely associated with the electrification of the gold mines on the Witwatersrand, and his many inventions of practical and effective devices in use on the mines are but a small part of his achievements in electrical engineering.
He retired to Durban, on pension, in September, 1938, his last position being Chief Assistant Consulting Electrical Engineer of the Central Mining and Investment Corporation, having had over 40 years' group and head office service.
He was elected an Associate Member of The Institution in 1903 and a Member in 1920, and served on the Local Advisory Committee from the time of its formation. He was also President of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers in 1921 and was one of its Honorary Members. He served in the South African War under the late Colonel L. I. Seymour and was in the siege of Kimberley.
He was of a bright and likeable disposition and will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends, particularly among the mining and commercial community of the Rand.
