"The death is announced of Dr. Martin Murphy, a prominent engineer, as having taken place at St Catharines, Ont., on January 10th, in the ninety fifth year of his age. He was born in Ireland, and went to Canada in 1868, where he speedily acquired an international reputation of railway bridge building, being in 1870 appointed Chief Engineer for projected lines of railway in Nova Scotia. From 871 to 1874 he was a contractor for bridges for the Inter-colonial Railway.
Dr. Murphy accupied the position of povincial Government engineer for Nova Scotia from 1875 to 1905, and in 1913 was appointed Government consulting engineer for the Western Division of the National Transcontinental Railway construction, retiring in 1918. He served a term as president of the Nova Scotia Institute of Science, and was president of the Canadian Social of Civil Engineering in 1902 and 1903. He was a frequent and valued contributor to many professional journals and periodicals."[1]
