Visit of the Iron and Steel Institute to the Iron, Steel and Engineering Industries of Manchester and District

Mitchell, Shackleton and Co. Ltd., Vulcan Works, Patricroft.

These Works were established in 1900 and have grown alongside the internal combustion engine industry in the manufacture of forgings, and especially the supply of finished crankshafts.

The works are well equipped with heat treatment plant, and the necessary machines for tensile, impact and Brinell testing. The plant is capable of producing forgings up to 6 tons in weight, and finished crankshafts up to 25 feet long and up to 8 or to throws. They also have the very latest machines for the grinding of both crankpins and shafts, and are suppliers to most of the leading makers of internal combustion engines.
