North of England Institute of Mining Engineers

1852 After a series of accidents in coal mines, a society was formed, to be called 'The North of England Society for the prevention of Accidents, and for other purposes connected with Mining' at Newcastle
Almost immediately afterwards the name was changed to the North of England Institute of Mining Engineers.
1852 Nicholas Wood was elected first President
1865 Nicholas Wood died. His successor as President was Mr. Thomas Emerson Forster, who was elected on 1st March 1866.
1870 The Institute broadened its remit to include mechanical engineers. The name was changed to the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers
