Created in 1834 by the merging of the Preston and Wigan Railway and the Wigan Branch Railway this 15.5 mile line opened in 1838.

In 1844 it bought the Bolton and Preston Railway

In 1889 the company was absorbed by the London and North Western Railway and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway
