"OTTO WEIGNER was closely concerned with the design and production of cranes and hoists during most of his professional career. He was born in 1883 and received his early education at the High School at Steyr in Austria, continuing his studies at the Technical College in Vienna, where he was awarded the mechanical engineering diploma. After gaining experience in England as a draughtsman and designer to Stothert and Pitt, Ltd., Bath, and Day, Sumners and Company, Ltd., Southampton, crane makers, he found similar employment with the Demag A.G. Co, Duisburg. In 1912 he secured an appointment as chief engineer of the crane department of the machine and wagon works at Simmering. This was followed by appointments in a similar capacity with several engineering firms, including the A. F. E. B. CO, Vienna (for which he was also sales manager and vice-director), and with the Elin A.G. Co of the same city. After holding this latter position for fourteen years Mr. Weigner went to New Zealand, where he remained for some years as a designer and draughtsman for cranes and hoists to William Cable and Company, Ltd., Wellington. More recently he had been in the employment of Cowans, Sheldon and Company, Ltd., Carlisle, engineers, and since 1948 he had held the appointment of chief engineer of the hoist department of Steels Engineering Products, Ltd., Sunderland. Mr. Weigner, whose death occurred on 12th June 1951, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1946."
