P. B. Burgoyne and Co
He/the company sponsored a prize for the best exportable table wine in South Africa - "The Burgoyne cup" - in the early 20s. Mr. Charles Kohler briefly describes his encounters with Mr. Burgoyne in his memoirs -
'But let me, for a moment, turn away from early strife and bitterness to recount a happy event, the visit earlier to South Africa of Cuthbert John Burgoyne Mr. Cuthbert Burgoyne, of Burgoyne Ltd., the well-known London firm of colonial wine merchants. During his stay in our country the Co-operative Wine-Growers* Association held a wine show of its 1920 vintages in competition for the Burgoyne prizes. I was fortunate in winning the most coveted of the prizes, the Burgoyne Silver Grecian Um for 50 leaguers of light dry white wine suitable for export. Mr. Burgoyne had come to South Africa specially to find out for himself what were the chances of creating an export trade. During the course of his visit he satisfied himself that the wines we were producing were suitable for the English market. ‘Before I leave this great country,’ he wrote in a letter of farewell to me, T wish to tell you that should much come of my mission, it will very largely be due to your energy and determination and your enthusiasm in the interests of the wine-farmers whose chairman you are....’[1]
Became part of Emu Wine Co. Pty. Ltd. in 1956, later taken over by Thomas Hardy & Sons, which became Accolade Wines.
