PERCIVAL JAMESON COULTHARD was associated for thirty-six years with Messrs. William Doxford and Sons, Ltd., of Sunderland. On the termination of a seven years' apprenticeship in 1912, he was employed in the drawing office, and four years later was placed in charge of turbine machinery and installations. He was then made leading hand in the steam reciprocating engine department and in 1920 completed a lengthy course of study at the Sunderland Technical College. His next appointment was that of maintenance engineer and designer of jigs and tools, with responsibility to the chief engineer for the production of heavy internal combustion engines and for extensions to the engine works.
He resigned this position in 1941 and entered the Glasgow office of the Admiralty, where he was engaged as torpedo production engineer until his death, which occurred in his fifty-third year on 19th March 1944. Mr. Couthard was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1939.
