Peter Ewart (c1767-1842) of the Soho Foundry
an employee of Boulton and Watt
c.1795 Designed a vertical cylinder-boring mill for installation at the works of Boulton and Watt. However, it was not constructed, Watt preferring the established horizontal type.
1842 September 15th. Died. 'On the 15th inst., at the Royal Dock Yard, Woolwich, age 75 years, Peter Ewart, Esq., chief engineer and inspector of machinery to her majesty's government.'[1] 'Frightful Accident and fatal Consequences in Woolwich Dock-yard. Mr. Peter Ewart, the chief engineer in her Majesty’s Dock-yard, Woolwich, was so seriously injured on the instant, died at 20 minutes past five yesterday morning, after suffering great and lingering pains. He was superintending the testing of chain cables for the use of her Majesty’s ships of war, when a link snapped, and the end of the chain struck him across the chest, and drove him against the dock-yard wall. The deceased, who was 70 years of age, had been a long time in the service, and was esteemed as a skilful and assiduous officer.'[2]
