PETER WHYTE, formerly Superintendent and Engineer of Leith Harbour and Docks, died at Edinburgh on the 31st December, 1915, aged 70.
Born on the 25th May, 1845, he gained his early practical experience at Perth and Glasgow.
In 1866 he was appointed assistant engineer at Bute Docks, Cardiff, becoming in 1875 Chief Assistant.
After occupying this position for 8 years he received his appointment at Leith, where he remained in charge for 30 years, during which period the port underwent considerable expansion and improvement.
In addition to the equipment of Edinburgh Dock and the construction of numerous wharves and other improvements in the existing harbour and docks, the chief work carried out by Mr. Whyte during his term of office was the construction of the Imperial Dock with its sea embankments, channel and entrance lock, and about 40 acres of quays reclaimed from the foreshore.
On his retirement in 1913 his services were retained by the Commissioners in an advisory capacity.
He was elected a Member on the 29th May, 1883.
