R. J. Low (c1903-1967)
1967 Obituary [1]
Mr R. J. Low (Associate Member), a well-known figure at Institution business meetings, died recently at the age of 64.
Educated at Bedford School and King's College, London, Mr Low was Chief Engineer of Howards and Sons Ltd of Ilford for 13 years. He spent a further five years in engineering before he retired in 1946 to pursue his interest in horology. An expert in this field, he specialised in the purchase and sale of historic watches and marine chronometers.
No man ever had a greater knowledge of the Institution's By-laws, which he studied assiduously, or a greater interest in the preservation of the rights of the individual. Council will remember his frequent reminders of members' rights and its own duties, and members will recall his many letters to the CME on the subject. The Institution has lost a 'watchdog' and a keen but exacting friend.
