REUBEN BARDSLEY, B.Sc., served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Urmson and Thompson, Ltd., Hathershaw Iron Works, Oldham, from 1917 to 1921 and remained with that firm as erector for a further three years. At the same time he attended Oldham Municipal Technical College and was awarded a Sons of Platt University Scholarship, which enabled him to study at Manchester University, where he graduated B.Sc., with honours in engineering in 1929.
During his vacations he gained additional practical experience in the works of Messrs. Platt Brothers, Oldham, and Messrs. Mather and Platt, Ltd., Manchester. He joined the staff of the latter firm in 1929, being first engaged as a tester in the pump department and later in the design and technical department. A year later he was appointed technical engineer with responsibility to the head of the department for outside erection. In 1934 he received an appointment from the British Aluminium Company as first assistant to the chief engineer of the firm's rolling mills at Warrington, and after holding this position until January 1943 he was promoted to be chief engineer of the company's Latchford Lock Works.
This appointment was made only a year before his untimely death, which occurred as the result of an accident in January 1944, at the early age of 39. Mr. Bardsley was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1931.
