Richard Garrett (1757-1839)
Richard Garrett (1757–1839) founded Richard Garrett and Sons
1757 October 12th. Born at Woodbridge, Suffolk, the son of Richard Garrett, Senior. Richard came from a family that had been blade-smiths since the late seventeenth century.
1778 At the age of twenty-one set up on his own account at nearby Leiston as a bladesmith. It was a small-scale business, making principally sickles and employing around eight to ten men.
He took work in William Cracy’s village forge as a bladesmith, making sickles, scythes and other hand implements and when Cracy died four years later Garrett acquired the freehold of the forge and the thatched cottage attached to it.
1778 He married Elizabeth Newson
1782 Birth of daughter Mary his eldest daughter
1779 August 4th. Birth of their son Richard II
c1788 Birth of daughter Elizabeth his second daughter
c1797 Birth of daughter Sarah
1801 Notice in newspaper about conterfeit sickles. Threat of action by Richard Garrett of Leiston and Abraham Garrett of Glenham [1]
1805 He retired from this business and worked as a farmer
1839 He died at Leiston, 'at an advanced age' on 27 September 1839. [2]
1840 March 31st. Death of Jemima 'at an advanced age, after a painful affliction', relict of the late Richard Garrett, the elder, of Leiston [3]
1841 Death of Sarah (age 48) the wife of George Whincop, plumber of Stoke Newington, the daughter of the late Richard Garrett of Leiston [4]
1842 Death of Elizabeth (age 54) the wife of John Williams, Wine Merchant of Marlborough Street, London,, the second daughter of the late Ricahrd Garrett of Leiston. [5]
1853 August 27th. Death of Mary age 71, the eldest daughter of the late Richard Garrett of Leiston [6]
