"RICHARD HENRY BUXTON was born in Derby in 1877, and served his apprenticeship there with Messrs. F. Longdon and Company, Ltd., general engineers, from 1891 to 1898, and during the same period took courses in mechanical and electrical engineering at the Derby Technical College. His services were retained by Messrs. Longdon and Company, Ltd., as assistant engineer and draughtsman for a further four years, after which he took up an appointment as electrical engineer to the Gold Coast Government Railway, and later became mechanical engineer to a gold mining company.
On his return to England in 1906, he was appointed to the National Boiler and General Insurance Co as an engineer surveyor, and held this position until 1917 when he joined the staff of the Wandsworth and District Gas Co as mechanical superintendent and began a connection which lasted for twenty-eight years. Subsequently he was appointed constructional engineer and, in addition, took over the duties of marine superintendent. He became deputy engineer in 1938 and assistant general manager five years later, followed by his retirement in 1945. Mr. Buxton, whose death occurred on 10th July 1947, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1919 and was transferred to Membership in 1935."
