MAJOR-GENERAL RICHARD HUGH STOTHERD, CB., late R.E., born on the 25th of November, 1828, was the son of the late General R. J. Stotherd, Colonel Commandant Royal Engineers.
He was educated at University College School, and at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He entered the corps of Royal Engineers in May, 1817, becoming Lieutenant in October, 1847, Captain in May, 1855, Major in November, 1870, Lieutenant-Colonel in August, 1872, and Colonel in August, 1877.
In March, 1853,he joined the Ordnance Survey as a Subaltern, and was employed in the South of Scotland and in Edinburgh until 1861. He was employed on the New Brunswick frontier in 1862, during the time of the 'Trent' affair.
