ROBERT DE WEND was killed in a carriage accident in August 1903, at the age of fifty-four years. He was the head of the famous ironmaking works at Hayange.
He commenced his business career in 1867, when he entered the Hayange Works with a view to taking charge of the commercial department of the concern. On the death of his father, in 1870, he became manager of the works, and in 1879 helped to found the Joeuf Works, in France, of which company he was one of the directors.
In 1898 he was appointed President of the Comite des Forges de France, and in 1900 he was elected Honorary President of the Congress of Metallurgy.
He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1872, and as President of the Reception Committee on the occasion of the visit of the Institute to Paris in September 1900, contributed largely to the success of that meeting.
