ROBERT JAMIESON BROWNE was born in Glasgow in 1870 and received his technical education at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. His first appointment was in the electrical department at the Forth Bridge works. Subsequently he became Assistant Electrician at the Glasgow International Exhibition in 1888.
In 1889 he went to India as Electrician to the British India Steam Navigation Co., staying with them until 1903. During this period he obtained leave to visit Afghanistan in 1894 to do some work for H.H. The Amir.
In 1900 he was selected to go to China with the China Expeditionary Force, during the Boxer Rising, on the hospital ship "Gwalior." In 1903 he was appointed to the Bengal Military Works Services, and in 1908 became Electrical Adviser to the Government of Bengal, which post he held until his retirement in 1926.
From the foregoing it will be seen that he had a varied and interesting career. After leaving India in 1930 he resided in Crieff, Scotland, until his death on the 12th February, 1942.
He joined The Institution as an Associate in 1892, and was elected a Member in 1898.
