ROBERT MONROE was born at Houston, Renfrewshire, in 1851.
He was educated at Whitburn and Market Harborough, and served his apprenticeship at the Falkirk Iron Works, Stirling, and with Messrs. John Elder and Co.
Before commencing on the principal work of his life, in South Wales, he served with Messrs. Walker, Henderson and Co. of Glasgow and Messrs. Edward Withy and Co. (now Furness, Withy and Co.) of West Hartlepool.
His connexion with the Barry Graving Dock and Engineering Co., Ltd., of which he was Managing Director, commenced at its inception forty years ago, and lasted until his death on 22nd July 1921, in his seventieth year.
One of the Founders of the Engineers and Shipbuilders Employers' Association in 1888, he became Honorary Secretary in 1898 and President in 1910.
As Honorary Secretary of the Bristol Channel Ship Repairers' Association he rendered valuable national service during the War. In this capacity, as Local Director of Ship Repairs between 1917 and 1919, he was responsible for dry-docking some 3,000 vessels of all tonnages, in addition to over 5,500 repairs carried out afloat.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1884; he was also a Member of the Institution of Naval Architects.
