ROBERT VIGERS, born at Westminster in 1826, died on the 23rd June, 1912, aged 85.
In 1860 he joined the firm of land agents and surveyors founded by his brother Francis, and continued to practise until 4 years before his decease. In addition to having the management of many large estates in London and country, Mr. Tigers was connected with the valuation and purchase of land for the principal railway-companies, the purchase of telegraphs by the State, the freeing of London bridges from tolls, and the acquisition of tramways by local authorities, besides acting in a large number of important arbitration, assessment and compensation cases in all parts of the Kingdom. He was concerned with the valuation and acquisition of all the land required for the metropolitan extensions of the London, Chatham and Dover Railway and the Great Central Railway, and also as agent for the Central London and other underground railways. He was frequently retained to give evidence before Parliamentary Committees.
In 1898 he was President of the Surveyors' Institution, and he was the originator and a generous supporter of the benevolent fund of that institution. He was also an honorary member of the Royal Society of Arts.
Mr. Vigers was elected an Associate of The Institution on the 7th December, 1869.
