Note 1811 date on stanchion

at Aberdare

A very early example of an iron tramway bridge, constructed in 1811 by the Aberdare Canal company to carry a feeder 4 ft 2" tramroad over the river Cynon between Trecynon and Robertstown. Designed by George Overton.

The iron decking plates are relatively modern, as are the angle iron handrails. An original railing stanchion has the date 1811 cast in (see photo) and the word 'Abernant', presumably referring to the Abernant Iron Co.
