"ROY BRUCE AVEY MACCURDY spent the whole of his professional career in New Zealand. He was born in 1887 and educated at Auckland Technical School and Bowers School for Engineers. In addition he studied at Auckland University School of Mines. He served an apprenticeship in the same city with George Fraser and Sons, Ltd., and for the next five years was employed by the Auckland Suburban Drainage Board, rising from junior to chief draughtsman, and finally becoming inspector of machinery.
In 1915 he entered the service of the New Zealand Ministry of Works where he stayed for the remainder of his career. He was first engaged as a draughtsman and assistant to the inspecting engineer at Wellington and eventually rose to be chief building-services engineer with responsibility for the execution of all government projects in that respect. In this capacity he was closely concerned with the provision of heating, ventilating, water supply and electrical services for all government hospitals and departmental buildings. During the 1939-45 war he rendered outstanding service to the New Zealand Government as expert adviser and executive in connexion with military camps and depots for both the New Zealand and United States Forces. Mr. MacCurdy had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1927. His death occurred on 17th September 1950."
