The B.E.3 was essentially the same as the B.E.1 and B.E.2 but fitted with a rotary engine. It was designed by John Kenworthy and made its first flight on 3rd May 1912 with Geoffrey de Havilland piloting.

On 13th May the plane was handed over to the Royal Flying Corps with the serial number 203 and the nickname Goldfish.

It was last recorded at the end of 1914 at Farnborough.
