1699 The hotel is reputed to be the oldest in Scotland, operating as a coaching inn, the Salutation Inn for many years.
1745 The hotel was visited by Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite rebellion. His reception by the proprietor has been offered as one explanation of the hotel's unusual name. The hotel became a local landmark, known as the "Sally",
1933 A company, the Salutation Hotel Limited, was incorporated
1939 The company went into voluntary liquidation on the sale of the hotel to the Aberdeen Hotel Co Limited
1969 David Bowie played in the hotel's Moncrieffe Suite during his UK tour
1991 After a series of changes of ownership, the Salutation was acquired by Strathmore Hotels
