Samuel Gurney (1816–1882), philanthropist and banker.
1816 Born son of Samuel Gurney (1786-1856), a partner in Gurney's Bank of Norwich and in Overend, Gurney and Co, bill brokers of Lombard Street, and his wife Elizabeth.
As a young man, Gurney became a partner in Overend, Gurney and Co, which was the leading discount house in the City of London.
1845 Henry Bewley and Samuel Gurney set up the Gutta Percha Co at works at High Street, Stratford, London. Gurney was a famous city money-dealer and bill-discounter. Both were distant from the running of the company[1].
1866 After the failure of Overend Gurney, Samuel Gurney remained on the board of companies interested in marine and life assurance, and in submarine telegraphy in the Mediterranean and elsewhere.
1882 Died at Tunbridge Wells
