SAMUEL HENRY LOUTTIT was born at Falmouth on the 16th of June, 1838, and was educated at the City of London School.
In 1857 he became a clerk in the office of the Secretary to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co and two years later was selected by one of the directors for the post of Secretary to Bray's Steam Traction Engine Co. That appointment he held until 1864, when he became Secretary to Muntz's Patent Metal Co.
In the following year, however, Mr. Louttit was appointed Secretary to the Hamilton Windsor Ironworks Co of Liverpool. During his connection with that company four shallow stern-wheel steamers were built for the King of Burma, as well as several light-draught steamers of similar design for the Government of India. He was also responsible, in conjunction with Samuel Sharrock, for the construction of the Midland Railway bridge over the Severn at Sharpness Point.
In 1877 Mr. Louttit was appointed Secretary to the Lambeth Waterworks Co, to the duties of which post those of General Manager were subsequently added.
