SAMUEL REID, born on the 12th September, 1867, was articled to Mr. F. P. Webb of Evesham for two years, and in 1885 entered the service of the Corporation under Mr. R. H. Wyrill, as whose assistant he was employed on the design and construction of various works connected with the water-supply of Swansea.
Proceeding subsequently to the Straits Settlements, he became second in the engineer’s department at Singapore, relinquishing this post in December, 1901, to take up the appointment of Engineer to the municipality of Penang. Shortly after entering on his new duties, however, he was obliged to go home on sick leave, and after his return his health continued precarious, necessitating his frequent absence on leave.
His death, which took place on the 9th April, deprived Penang of the services of a capable public servant, who, had he enjoyed good health, would doubtless have justified the choice of the municipality.
Mr. Reid was elected an Associate Member of the Institution on the 6th December, 1892.
