SHANKAR BALWANT DESHPANDE, B.A. ,had a long connection with the electrical side of mechanical engineering, and had spent the whole of his professional career in India, where he was born in 1893. He was educated at the College of Engineering in Poona and at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, obtaining the electrical technology diploma.
On the completion of brief periods of practical training he entered the Government ammunition factory at Kirkee and served as assistant electrical engineer for two years. His next post, which he held from 1921 to 1927, was that of senior technical engineer to the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company, Ltd., in Bombay.
He then became assistant electrical engineer to the East Indian Railway, and for some years was personal assistant to the chief electrical engineer, with responsibility for design, estimates, and specifications.
From 1937 he was for a period of years divisional electrical engineer to the East Indian Railway at Lahore. In 1941, he was director of electrical engineering in the Munitions Production Supply Department, Calcutta. After some service with the North Western Railway he was appointed, in 1947, chief electrical engineer to the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway.
Finally, he became chief civil, mechanical, and electrical engineer of the Martin and Burn Co, Burnpur, Bengal. Mr. Deshpande was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1936, and was transferred to Membership in 1939. His death occurred at Burnpur, Bengal, on 27th October 1949."
