c.1896 Shoreditch Vestry was one of the first local authorities to use steam from the destruction of refuse for electricity generation.

1897 The station was opened by Lord Kelvin; it contained three generators each of 165 kW, and three of 70kW.

It rapidly became apparent that further capacity was needed and extra plant was installed.

By 1902 a new power station had to be constructed at the corner of Whiston-street and Bath-place, Haggerston, on the banks of the Regent's Canal.
