1842 the Manchester Association for the Prevention of Smoke was established.

1890 the Leeds Smoke Abatement Committee was formed

1899 Formation of the Coal Smoke Abatement Society in London; Sir William B. Richmond was the first president[1]

1905 Whilst addressing Coal Smoke Abatement Society the Harold Voeux coined the term "smog" [2]

By 1929 national organisations had been set up, notably the National Smoke Abatement Society

1929 The Coal Smoke Abatement Society and the Smoke Abatement League merged.

1929 The National Smoke Abatement Society was formed with Dr Harold A. Des Voeux, who had been one of the founding members of the Coal Smoke Abatement Society, elected President.

1930 Dr H. A. Des Voeux was president of the National Smoke Abatement Society[3]. The Society's annual meeting was held in Leicester[4]

1936 8th Annual Conference[5]

1958 Became the National Society for Clean Air[6]

2007 Renamed Environmental Protection UK
