STAMFORD HARRY ROWLEY, who was managing director of Messrs. Barlow and Chidlaw of Manchester since 1907, was at one time the only draughtsman employed by Messrs. Alfred Herbert, which was then (about 1893) only a very small firm.
He had been educated in Manchester and served his apprenticeship in the workshop and drawing office of Messrs. Kendall and Gent.
In 1894 Mr. Rowley visited Chicago Exhibition as representative of some English engineering firms, and on returning to this country became head draughtsman for Messrs. De Bergue and Company, Manchester. He also served for a short time with Messrs. W. J. Bates and Company, Denton, and was subsequently works manager at the Vaughan Crane Company.
In 1904 he was appointed works manager to Messrs. Sir W. H. Bailey and Company, and three years later became managing director of Messrs. Barlow and Chidlaw, a position which he held until his death.
Mr. Rowley had been a Member of the Institution since 1907 and he died on 17th December 1929, at the age of 62.
