SYDNEY HERBERT COOK Was born in Liverpool on 16th June 1882.
He was educated at Liverpool College Upper School, and at the University.
From 1899 to 1904 lie served an apprenticeship with Messrs. Fawcett, Preston and Co., and then went as a sea-going engineer with Messrs. Lamport and Holt, passing the Board of Trade examination for 1st class engineer in 1908.
After spending a year in the engineering department of Messrs. Lever Bros., Port Sunlight, he entered the drawing office of Messrs. Workman, Clark and Co., being engaged in designing large marine engines.
In 1914 he was appointed Works Manager to Messrs. Harland and Wolff, Ltd., at Bootle, which position he held until his untimely death. This happened on 27th July 1923 through the capsizing of his motor yacht of the coast of North Wales, when his two companions were drowned and he was killed by the boom striking him on the head.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1913, and a Member in 1919.
