The Thackray Medical Museum was founded in 1990 by Paul Thackray, a grandson of Charles Frederick Thackray the founder of the firm of Charles F. Thackray of Leeds, with the intention of illustrating the history of medicine in general, whilst also trying to illustrate and preserve the history of the medical supply industry worldwide.
The Museum now holds over 50,000 objects, as well as a library of over 10,000 books on the subject.
The library also holds a large collection of over 16,000 pieces of trade literature and catalogues of world-wide medical, surgical and pharmaceutical supply firms from 1772 to the present.
