It began as the shop of I. S. Chapman, where Hannibal Hamlin Houghton was employed. Alexander and Sewall Thayer bought the business and operated it as A. & S. Thayer.
Thayer, Houghton & Co was formed as a partnership of Alexander Thayer (born 15 Jun 1813, Bellingham, Norfolk County, Mass., died 23 Mar 1895, New Haven, New Haven County, Conn.); Hannibal Hamlin Houghton; and Edwin C. Cleveland.
