THOMAS BRIER served his apprenticeship from 1901 to 1907 with Messrs. H. Berry and Company, Ltd., in Leeds, and was associated with that firm for the whole of his professional career. After being engaged on machine tool repairs and plant maintenance, he was appointed junior machine shop foreman in 1910, and placed in charge of the firm's apprentices. He held that position until 1916, when he was promoted to be machine shop foreman, with responsibility to the managing director for all machinery operations, tool room, and smith's work. He was also personally responsible for the construction of three units of special hydraulic pumps, each consisting of seven 150 h.p. electrically driven pumping engines, for Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd.
In addition, Mr. Brier was a teacher in engineering subjects at the evening classes at Morley. Technical Institute, and was later appointed superintendent of the Pontefract Junior Instruction centre. His death occurred on 19th February 1941, in his fifty-sixth year.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1931.
