THOMAS CHARLES CLARKE, son of the late Mr. Joseph Clarke, M.D., was born on the 28th of April, 1838, and was educated at King’s College, London.
At eighteen years of age he was articled to Edwin Clark, who was then practising in Westminster. On the expiration of his pupilage in 1860 he spent some time in Ireland on the contract for the Dungannon and Omagh Railway, and was then for four years in the service of the Admiralty, attached to the Coast Guard Office of the Department of Works and engaged in the erection of piers and buildings on the coasts of Norfolk, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
In 1865 Mr. Clarke was appointed Assistant Borough Engineer to the Corporation of Portsmouth, and during the four years he held that position assisted in preparing plans for the main drainage of the town.
From 1868 to 1871 he acted as Engineer to the Local Board of Oxford, for which city he prepared a scheme of sewerage, approved by the Local Government Board and subsequently revised and carried out by his successor, W. H. White.
Mr. Clarke’s long connection with South America commenced in 1871, when he was appointed by Messrs. Dreyfus, Hermanos and Co. of Lima, Chief of a Commission of Engineers entrusted with the task of surveying and reporting upon the guano deposits on the coast of Peru.....[more]
