1842 Left Sandersons to set up his own business with his brother, Mark Firth, smelting steel at Portobello works, Charlotte Street, Sheffield. Their father joined them shortly afterwards, together with head smelter Joseph Bridden, and the business became Thomas Firth and Sons.
1846 April 13th. Married(1) in Sheffield to Frances Rush Scott
1851 Living at 2 Spring Place, Courant? Walk, Eccleshall Bierlow, Sheffield: Thomas Firth (age 29 born Sheffield), Steel merchant - Widower. With his two sister-in-law Alice Scott (age 22 born Ashton under Lyne) and Isabella Scott (age 21 born Nottingham). One servant.
