"THOMAS JOHN ORME was associated with the road services of the London County Council, and later with those of the London Passenger Transport Board during practically the whole of his engineering career. He was educated at the Goldsmiths' College and served his apprenticeship from 1905 to 1910 with the Manganese, Bronze and Brass Company, Ltd., London. After a brief experience as journeyman he joined, in 1912, the tramways service of the London County Council as a technical assistant and was placed in charge of the works order department. In 1916 he was posted to the Royal Naval Air Service as technical instructor of an aeroplane section and was on active service in Italy and the Near East. On demobilization in 1919 he returned to his previous position in the works order department at Charlton with the additional duties of progress inspector. He continued in this work up to the time of his death, which occurred on 21st October 1947 at the age of fifty-eight. Mr. Orme was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1932."
