Thomas Longridge Gooch (1808-1882) was the civil engineer of the Manchester and Leeds Railway from 1831 to 1844
1808 November 1st. Born the eldest son of John Gooch of Bedlington and his wife Anna, the daughter of Thomas Longridge of Newcastle.
On 6 October 1823, Gooch was apprenticed for six years to George Stephenson; with Stephenson, he surveyed the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway and for 2 1⁄2 years from 1826 acted as Stephenson's secretary and draughtsman on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, living in Stephenson's house in Liverpool.
In January 1829, Gooch became Resident Engineer for the Liverpool end of the L&MR, but in April the same year he took a temporary appointment as Resident Engineer of the Bolton and Leigh Railway
In 1830, Stephenson was appointed to survey the route of the proposed Manchester and Leeds Railway, and Gooch was appointed his assistant. Gooch carried out most of the actual surveying for the new line, and was in charge of the construction.

With his wife Ruthanna (age 47 born Newcastle) and their daughter Mary (age 24 born Coventry) and their son Frederick (age 7 born France). Also their nieces Alice E. Topham (age 32 born Liverpool), Kate Barratt (age 18 born Manchester) and Mary Barratt (age 16 born Manchester) - all three unmarried. Plus four servants. [2]
1861 His daughter Mary marries Robert Robey Redmayne [3]
1871 Living at Team Lodge, Durham (age 62 born Brompton, London), Civil Engineer. With his wife Ruthanna (age 57 born Newcastle-upon-Tyne). Plus four servants. [4]
