THOMAS ORMONDE BERMINGHAM OTWAY-RUTHVEN was for many years chief mechanical engineer of the Baro-Kano Railway, Northern Nigeria, an appointment he took up in 1910.
He was trained as a premium apprentice at Crewe works, and then went to Brighton in 1894 as an improver in the works of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway.
He remained with the company until 1909, first as a draughtsman for a period of nine years and later as district locomotive superintendent at Battersea.
He went to Nigeria in 1910 as assistant locomotive superintendent of the Baro-Kano Railway; he was later for a time locomotive superintendent to the Eastern Nigerian Railways Construction.
Mr. Otway-Ruthven was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1914 and was transferred to Membership in 1917.
He died on 11th March 1931.
