Sir Thomas Selby Tancred (1840-1910), 8th Baronet, Mining and Railway Engineer[1]

1840 Born at Belford, Northumberland[2]

1853-4 Educated in Christchurch, New Zealand, son of Sir Thomas Tancred[3]

1854 Travelled back from Australia[4]

Educated at Radley and Bradfield

1861 Baronet, living in Adderstone, Northumberland with his grandfather Prideaux J Selby 71, and his uncle Edmund Antrobus 50, Francis M Antrobus 45, William H Johnston 27, Fanny L Johnston 26, and Lucy S Tancred 18, Ethel M S Johnston 1, Sybil M Johnston 4[5]

Pupil of George Willoughby Hemans

1866 Married Mary Harriet Hemans in London[6], thus son-in-law of George Willoughby Hemans under whom he had began his professional career[7]

Moved to New Zealand where he worked for the Public Works Department

1868 of Canterbury, New Zealand, became an Associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers[8]

1872 Lived in Canterbury[9]

1876 Returned to England; formed partnership Hemans, Falkiner and Tancred, consultants to the New Zealand Government.

1878 Partner in Falkiner and Tancred

1883 Partner in Tancred, Arrol and Co, involved in the construction of the Forth Bridge

Worked on railway projects around the world.

c.1887 Supervised construction of the Delagao Bay and East African Railway[10]

c.1900 Engaged in constructing a railway across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

1910 Died in London; buried in Kensal Green Cemetery
