Thomas Smith (1757- ) of St. Lawrence Ropery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
1757 Thomas Smith born at Amble, son of Thomas and France Smith
c.1771 Apprenticed at age 14 to Anthony Pearson, rope maker, of St. Lawrence House.
1780 When Anthony Pearson died he took over the business.
1781 He married Pearson's daughter, Mary; they had 3 children.
1783 Birth of son Thomas
1787 Birth of son William Smith
He was twice mayor of Newcastle (1803 and 1813).
1810 With his sons Thomas, junior, and William, he started a ship building business at St.Peter's taking over the shipyard of William Rowe. see T. and W. Smith
1836 He died on March 6, 1836, having lived a long life of 78 years.
