Thomas William Embleton
Thomas William Embleton (1809-1893), Mining engineer.
University of Edinburgh.
Apprenticed to his uncle George Hill of Kenton, a leading mining engineer in the North of England.
1830. He succeeded John Blenkinsop as manager of the Middleton Collieries, near Leeds.
1865. Manager for J. and J. Charlesworth Collieries until Christmas 1888.
Became a partner for Monk Bretton Colliery near Barnsley.
He established the South Yorkshire Colliery Viewers' Association, which subsequently became the Midland Institute of Mining, Civil and Mechanical Engineers.
1871 Living at Churchside, Methley, Yks: Thos Wm Embleton (age 61 born Newcastle-upon-Tyne), Viewer of Collieries. With his wife Caroline Ann Embleton (age 59 born Durham) and their eight children; Caroline Ann Embleton (age 34 born Rothwell); Isabell Embleton (age 32 born Rothwell); Emma Embleton (age 31 born Rothwell); Louisa Embleton (age 29 born Rothwell); Thos Wm Embleton (age 28 born Rothwell), Viewer of Collieries; Denis Maud Embleton (age 25 born Rothwell), Mechanical Engineer; Emily Maud Embleton (age 20 born Rothwell); and Henry Cawood Embleton (age 16 born Rothwell). Two servants.[1]
1872 Appointed by the Home Secretary one of the examiners of mining students for Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
He married Caroline Annie, daughter of Mr. Thomas Easton, a colliery proprietor belonging to the County of Durham, by whom be had three sons and three daughters.
