His education was received at the Marlborough House School, Weymouth, and at the Noortheig Collegiate School, Cambridge.

In 1878 he began a training of six years in H.M.S. "Marlborough" as an engineer student, and, having passed his examinations, received a commission in the Royal Navy.

This he resigned in 1889 when he became superintendent for Messrs. W. Hill and Co., engineers and contractors, with whom he was employed for ten years.
