1850 Listed as Millwrights & Engineers, Machinists, Machine Makers, 1 Charles Street, Livesey Street, Oldham Road. William Towers (millwright) - 24 Chapman Street. Joseph Shirley (engineer)- 5 Charles Street

Adshead' 1851 map identifies 'Towers & Shirley's Machine Works' bounded by Charles Street, Roe St, and Glass House Street. Ground area approx 60 yds by 55 yds. Immediately south west was the glass works of Percival, Yates and Vickers. The 1848 O.S. map shows the glass works, the site of Towers & Shirley's premises being unused land.
