1876 Started work in the workshops and offices of Messrs Appleby Brothers (to 1879)

1878 Took various courses at University College, London including sciences, art and engineering.

1881 Joined Henry J. Coles

1886 Advanced to associate from student membership of Inst Civil Engineers; assistant manager at Henry J Coles

1891 Helen M Coles 63, Walter Coles 30, mechanical engineer, Ernest Coles 26, engineer draughtsman, Helen Coles 41, Alice Coles 39 lived in Peckham[1]

1901 Mechanical engineer (manager), living in Derby with his brother Ernest and sisters[2]

1911 Engineer, director of crane making business (presumably Henry J. Coles), living in Derby with his sisters, Helen Mary Ann Coles 61 and Charlotte Alice Coles 59, and younger brother, Ernest Harcourt Coles 46, mechanical draughtsman, crane making[3]
