"WILFRED RAY SWEETING was born in 1882 and received his education at the West Hartlepool Technical College. On the termination of an eight years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Casebourne and Company, Ltd., of West Hartlepool, in 1906, he went to sea, and during the next four years served as marine engineer, obtaining his Board of Trade Second-Class Engineer's Certificate.
He then joined the staff of the North Eastern Railway, and, after holding the position of engineer in charge of the hydraulic plant at the Middlesbrough dock, he was made foreman engineer with responsibility for the maintenance of the dock's entire plant, including engines up to 20,000 i.h.p. In 1916 he was appointed works engineer to the Bristol Wagon and Carriage Co, and seven years later he accepted a similar position with the National Smelting Company, Ltd. His final appointment, which dated from 1934, was that of inspecting engineer at the works of the Bristol Aeroplane Co. Mr. Sweeting, whose death occurred on 20th August 1945, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1921."
