William Cardwell (c1812-1878) of W. and J. Cardwell, ironfounders and engineers.
1878 'Another churchman and Conservative has passed away in the person of Mr. William Cardwell, of Springfield Terrace. He died on Saturday. Deceased was a member of the firm of W. and J. Cardwell, engineers and ironfounders, Dewsbury, and was concerned in collieries at Chickenley and Whitley, at which latter place he had a country house and farm. He was a member of the Thornhill Local Board, and for some time sat as chairman. Mr. Cardwell never took a prominent part in public affairs in the borough, preferring to devote himself to business. He was highly esteemed by a large circle, embracing men of all shades of politics. The funeral took place on Wednesday forenoon, and was largely attended.'[1]
